How long does it take to explore Kefalonia?

Well, it’s safe to say that you’ll need more time than you think!

The island has stunning beaches, charming villages, and breathtaking views you won’t want to miss. Plus, Kefalonia has a relaxing atmosphere that will make you want to take things slow and savor every moment.

But let’s get down to business. If you have a week to spare, here’s our ideal itinerary for Kefalonia!

Start your trip with a visit to the southeast tip of the island, near Mounda beach. This paradise-like beach is a favorite nesting spot for Caretta Caretta turtles. Spend the morning enjoying the soft sand and shallow waters. Afterward, head to the nearby village of Katelios for a delicious lunch at a traditional tavern. Then, make your way to Skala, a popular tourist resort with a long, well-equipped beach, shops, and clubs.

Antisamos beach is a must-visit for its crystal-clear waters and lush greenery. You can choose to relax at one of the beach clubs or find a secluded spot in the free area. Behind the beach, you’ll find a Mediterranean scrub teeming with insects, so remember not to eat on the beach to avoid any unwanted guests. During lunchtime, make sure to visit the enchanting Melissani Lake, which reveals its beauty around 12.30 – 13.30.

You must have come across the famous Myrtos beach in your research. With its white pebbles, turquoise waters, and a majestic rock face covered in greenery, it’s truly a sight to behold. However, the high temperatures and rough waters can make it a bit challenging to fully enjoy. After soaking up the sun for a while, consider retreating to one of the cozy taverns in Divarata or the Myrtillo café for some delicious Greek yogurt with honey and other local delicacies. Just a short drive away is the charming village of Assos, offering a picturesque setting overlooking Myrtos beach. With its colorful houses, blooming flowers, and tranquil bay, it’s a perfect spot to relax and savor a cup of coffee.

Head to Fiskardo in the north of Kefalonia for a vibrant display of colors. From ivory pebbles and deep blue waters to lush greenery and bright purple bougainvillea, the village is a visual treat. Fiskardo has gained popularity in recent years, attracting yachts and visitors seeking upscale amenities like clubs and boutiques. However, the northern part of the island also offers a timeless charm, with secluded beaches, verdant landscapes, and quaint stone villages. While each bay in the area has its own unique charm, Alaties, known as the “salata,” is a top choice for its natural pools and stunning sunset views.

After a brief stroll along the Argostoli seafront to observe the serene Caretta Caretta turtles swimming among the fishing boats, we set off for Lixouri. The ferry ride is frequent and lasts only around twenty minutes. A refreshing dip at the red Xi Beach followed by a chilled iced coffee at Vatsa tavern, then onwards to the north, heading to Porto Atheras. The beach boasts gray sand, is secluded and peaceful, with shallow waters perfect for kids and snorkeling. While there are no amenities on the beach, there is an excellent tavern just a few steps away from the shore where you can relax during the hottest part of the day. The sunset over Paliki is a must-see from Petani beach, just a short drive away. Wrap up the day with an aperitif or fresh seafood enjoyed right on the beach.

Fteri is the most famous of the beaches near Zola that are inaccessible by road, although it may not be the most stunning. Kamari and Xarakas are our top picks, not forgetting the breathtaking Gianniskaris cave! Are you prepared to discover your own natural haven among unspoiled coves and waters so crystal clear they appear surreal? You can access these beaches via water taxi, organized group tours, or private excursions. If you prefer to stay in the area and enjoy amenities and services, don’t overlook Agia Kiriaki and Vouti, both offering taverns and equipped beaches.

Wasn’t enough?

Well …maybe the local food will convince you.

The traditional dishes of Kefalonia are kreatopita (meat pie), bourbourelia (soup of mixed beans), rabbit stew, strapatsada (eggs with tomatoes), riganada (bread slices with oregano) and potato soup.
