The To Do List in Corfu

Old Town

Corfu’s beauty lies in its rich blend of global influences. You can appreciate the stunning Italian architecture, serene squares, impressive spires, and robust medieval stone walls that create a picturesque setting just waiting to be explored. The diverse architectural styles reflect various parts of Europe, including the charming British town square known as The Spianada, which boasts Greece’s only cricket field. A charming row of cafes along The Liston evokes the feel of Paris’ Rue de Rivoli. Additionally, the Venetian heritage is woven into a maze of narrow, walkable streets adorned with vibrant bougainvillea cascading over colorful walls and terracotta rooftops.

Church of Saint Spyridon

The striking, red-domed belltower will catch your eye from a distance. Once inside, you can pay your respects at the tomb of St. Spyridon, the beloved patron saint of the island. His preserved body rests in a beautifully decorated sarcophagus. Local folklore suggests that the saint’s slippers are worn thin because he strolls through town during the night.

Old Fortress and New Fortress

Both locations provide stunning panoramic views of the sea, perfect for capturing memorable photos. The Old Fortress is perched on a rocky islet and dates back to the Byzantine period. And don’t let the name mislead you; the New Fort is quite ancient as well, having been constructed by the Venetians in the sixteenth century.

Pontikonisi

If the throngs of tourists are overwhelming, consider visiting Pontikonisi, located at the southern end of Kanoni. This small islet, known as ‘Mouse Island’ in Greek, is home to the serene seventeenth-century Venetian Monastery of Vlacherna. Surrounded by a peaceful setting of trees, it offers a tranquil escape and is a picturesque location that you may have seen on postcards.

Mon Repos

This impressive home from the nineteenth century was constructed for Sir Frederick Adam, the British High Commissioner. It also served as the residence of author Lawrence Durrell during the 1930s. Why visit? To experience the British impact on the island. Notably, the Duke of Edinburgh was born at Mon Repos.

Achillion Palace

Built in the 1800s with an extravagant flair reminiscent of the grand palaces of Vienna, this palace has played host to numerous glamorous events over the years. Situated close to Gouvia, this former royal residence is now a museum with a rich history. James Bond enthusiasts might recall it as the casino featured in ‘For Your Eyes Only’. Additionally, it boasts royal ties, being the birthplace of Prince Philip and originally designed as a luxurious getaway for Empress Elisabeth of Austria.

Paleokastritsa Monastery

A pastel-painted monastery from the thirteenth century perched on a cliff with breathtaking views of the sea. The incredible vistas of the island are just one of the many reasons to visit this sacred place. The museum showcases important icons, and the monastery is still active. You can observe the monks as they carry out their daily routines while you explore the area.

Easter Corfu island is an amazing Experience

Corfu offers a truly unique Easter celebration, making it one of the most wonderful times to visit. The church services are stunning, and on Good Friday, the processions of Christ’s funerary bier are particularly special, as both the Orthodox and Catholic Churches participate on the same day, even though Catholic Easter occurs a week earlier. A standout moment is the Saturday morning tradition of dropping vibrant botides (clay pots) from balconies in the Old Town, a practice you won’t find anywhere else. Above all, it’s the extraordinary atmosphere that fills the island throughout the entire Easter week that makes it so memorable.
