Top landmarks to visit in the beautiful city of Kavala

The castle of Kavala

Starting in the 5th century BC, Kavala was encircled by a protective wall. A significant change occurred in 1307 under the rule of Andronicos II Palaeologos, when extensive walls were constructed stretching from the sea to the hilltop. In 1391, the Byzantine castle was entirely demolished when the Turks took control of the city. The Ottomans reconstructed the castle in 1425, and the structure we see today largely reflects that restoration.

The Kavala aqueduct

The Kavala aqueduct, commonly referred to as the Kamares, is a beautifully preserved landmark in the city of Kavala. It’s no surprise that this impressive structure is one of the city’s highlights. Although it is believed to have Roman roots, the version we see today was built in the sixteenth century.

Archeological site of Philipi

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Philippi, located just a short distance from Kavala, is linked to numerous remarkable historical figures and events that have influenced the western world. The impressive monuments that remain today serve as a testament to the rich history of the cultures that thrived and interacted in this area.

What makes this museum special is that it features a unique exhibition dedicated to the processing of Oriental tobaccos, a rarity not seen in any other museum globally. Additionally, it highlights the economic and social history of the area, making it a fascinating place to visit.
